To B The Best For The World
“Believe in being better” - in a few simple words, our motto captures the enormous dedication our team has to providing the best quality coffee while keeping the spirit of our commitment to the environment.
Recently, the B Lab released their first “Best For The World” list and we are very proud to be among only five Canadian companies selected for this achievement. Not only does this award take into account our dedication to sustainable production, it also examines our business practices from relationships with workers and suppliers, to creating the first lifecycle carbon neutral coffee in Canada, even down to our movement toward zero waste.
But for all of our achievements and innovations, we’ll never lose sight that it all started on Salt Spring Island with a desire to brew a great cup of coffee in the most environmentally friendly way. Meeting new people and getting involved in our community is also part of our identity - take a peek at some of our stories when you #needalift.
And when we look at all the elements the B Lab team considered, we can’t help but reflect on our motto. Because among all the companies that want, or try, or attempt it…
we believe in being better.
Coffee Creation Series: Varietals, varietals, varietals
When it comes to wine, the flavour and characteristics of each varietal are determined by individual grapes. But did you know that also extends to coffee?

The varietal, along with the distinct landscape of each coffee region, and the personal touches by farmers all contribute to creating the unique coffees found around the world. In order to develop more complex, signature coffee, farmers experiment by creating hybrids. Salt Spring Coffee fan favourite Byron’s Maracaturra is a perfect example, as it combines the Marigojipe and Caturra from Nicaragua to produce a rich, full bodied coffee.
Learn more about which varietals we use at Salt Spring Coffee in our latest blog post.
Coffee Creation Series: Raising Coffee
We regularly talk about our origin trips to the different co-ops and farms that we work with, as well as our search for new coffee to share. The journey from harvest to cupping is a long, but exciting one - and we want to share it with you. Our latest education series is an exploration into this process.
For our first blog post, we take a look at where it all starts: the soil.

Each growing area has a distinct terroir; that is, the characteristics in green coffee beans local geography and climate instil within it. Many of our farmers take great care to develop their soil - almost as much care as they put into the coffee itself. Take a look at our blog and read for yourself how essential good soil is for good coffee.
Classic Single Origin: Peru
This past Wednesday, we were treated to a visit from our friends at C.A.C. Pangoa in Peru. Our relationship with C.A.C. Pangoa has helped to produce one of our favourite Fair to Farmer coffees, the Classic Single Origin Peru. If you’re someone with a taste for coffee that’s citrus inspired, this is definitely the bean for you.
#needalift
We love community gardens and in Vancouver, especially East Van, there is no shortage of options. Not only do they contribute to the sustainability of a neighbourhood, but they bring people together to form a collective with similar goals, values, and interests that benefit these neighbourhoods.
And with Vancouver’s unpredictable weather, we couldn’t think of a better group who might #needalift.
#needalift
Our love of community is a value that runs deep within our company. Recently, we’ve used our social media channels to find people who might #needalift in their day. On a few occasions, we took along a camera to capture what happened. The result? Just take a look at our second video from the line up at Anton’s on Hastings street.
