Coffee Subscription Pick May 7 - 20: Moka Java
If you’ve ever wondered what the first blended coffee was, look no further. Taking its name from the city of Mocha in Yemen, this coffee blended Yemeni beans with Indonesian beans from the Java region. It quickly became known for its rich, Indonesian qualities while still maintaining the sweet, berry flavours of African beans.
For our blend, we follow the process of mixing African and Indonesian beans, but source ours from Ethiopia and Sumatra. These coffee beans are naturally processed, certified organic and Fair Trade. Though we use different regions than the original blend, our Moka Java still holds the best of both worlds in your cup.
Enjoy!
What’s In A Coffee Trip?
We have a special event lined up for Salt Spring Island this Saturday… our co-founders Mickey & Robbyn will be at our Ganges coffee house to celebrate our Sweet 16!
Part of our birthday events, Mickey & Robbyn will host an interactive presentation of their latest trip to Peru, as well as reminisce over Salt Spring Coffee memories from the past sixteen years. As many of you have read in Mickey’s recent post, this latest origin trip was an important one for Salt Spring Coffee’s Fair to Farmer Direct Trade program, and this presentation promises to be entertaining as well as educational. Joining Mickey and Robbyn are two special coffee guests from the Villa Rica and Pangoa co-op farms in Peru.
After the presentation, guests are invited to stick around for some sweet treats and deals on Salt Spring Coffee merchandise. It’s all part of making our birthday a truly Sweet 16!
#sscsweet16
This year we’re celebrating our Sweet 16 and thanks to our friends at Gastown’s Cartems Donuterie, we’re making it a truly sweet occasion!
Over the past few weeks, we’ve worked closely with the team at Cartems to create a special edition espresso donut made with Salt Spring Coffee’s Metta Espresso to celebrate this milestone with our friends and community. So how can you get your hands on these donuts? All you have to do is tweet!
Starting April 23, Twitter followers who use the hashtag #sscsweet16 could be one of six lucky people to receive a dozen espresso donuts on our birthday Friday, April 27. Of course, to ensure you’ll get one of these sweet treats visit Cartems Donuterie in Gastown or our Main Street and Tsawwassen Kiosk locations where they will be sold for one day only.
We also have a special event planned at our Ganges coffee house for our friends on Salt Spring Island on Saturday, April 28. Stay tuned for more details and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for all the birthday action this week! Thanks to our friends at Cartems Donuterie - we can’t wait for Friday!
The next time you visit one of our coffee houses, you could get a free cup just for being our friend. Show the cashier that you Like us on Facebook, Follow us on Twitter, or check-in on Foursquare and we’ll pour you a free 16 oz. drip coffee!
After all, what’s more social than getting together with friends for a coffee?
To B The Best For The World
“Believe in being better” - in a few simple words, our motto captures the enormous dedication our team has to providing the best quality coffee while keeping the spirit of our commitment to the environment.
Recently, the B Lab released their first “Best For The World” list and we are very proud to be among only five Canadian companies selected for this achievement. Not only does this award take into account our dedication to sustainable production, it also examines our business practices from relationships with workers and suppliers, to creating the first lifecycle carbon neutral coffee in Canada, even down to our movement toward zero waste.
But for all of our achievements and innovations, we’ll never lose sight that it all started on Salt Spring Island with a desire to brew a great cup of coffee in the most environmentally friendly way. Meeting new people and getting involved in our community is also part of our identity - take a peek at some of our stories when you #needalift.
And when we look at all the elements the B Lab team considered, we can’t help but reflect on our motto. Because among all the companies that want, or try, or attempt it…
we believe in being better.
LOCO First Tuesday Mixer: Wrap-Up
We’re still feeling fantastic after a great night hosting the first LOCO BC Business Mixer of 2012 this past Tuesday. Thank you to everyone involved for helping to make such a successful event, especially to Modo for providing transport to and from our Richmond roastery. With catering by local favourite Organic Lives, and snacks from Zazubean and Sip Soda, our guests were in for a treat.
Our friend Sara Dent was on hand to take some photos, a small portion of which we’re sharing. To see the entire collection, visit Sara’s Flickr profile.
Thanks again everyone - we’re looking forward to next month’s mixer at The HiVE!
#needalift
Nothing says winter in Canada more than a visit to the hockey rink. When we visited 8 Rinks in Burnaby, we thought about who might #needalift most and after meeting this self professed “coffeeholic”, our choice was easy.
#needalift
We’ve visited community gardens, bus stops, even Costco, surprising people who #needalift but it all started at our Main Street Coffee House. People regularly check-in to our Main Street Coffee House on Foursquare and we wanted to reward them for staying active online. If you’re a Foursquare Newbie, check-in to any of our coffee houses for a surprise!
